Headlights, Please Help!!!

Okay I have an 83 Z. When I turn on my headlights(low beams) none of them light up. But when I turn on the HIGH BEAMs, ALL 4 LIGHT UP! WHERE is the problem? Could it be a wire? What wires should I check?

Please email me. Thanks.

headlamp bulbs are dual filament, try replacing your headlights with new ones and see if the problem corrects itself.

It's unlikely that both low-beam filaments burn out at the same time, but it's definitely possible. If 2vmodular's suggestion doesn't work, then the other possibility is that the low-beam function on your beam-selector switch isn't working anymore. You can check that just by seeing if there's voltage at the bulb connectors (brown wire) with the headlights on and the selector on low-beam.

Otherwise, to answer your last question, yes, just the low-beam bulbs.

It sounds like an earthing problem. You have the possibility for all sorts of weird things happening when an earth goes bad. Put a voltage meter on the system to see if power is raching the lights, if it is, then it is likely to be the earth. All the lights should come on in high beam I thought, so it sounds like the earth for the low beams only.

The negative terminal of the car battery is connected to the car body and the engine. This is called the earth or ground - they are both exactly the same thing. It is called the earth, because on mains power supply there is part of the system that uses the Earth / ground to get some of the electricity back to the power station.

On a car, all the electricity gets back to the battery through the earth connection to the car body

The positive + side of battery is connected to the fuse box, the alternator and the ignition switch.

When the engine is running the alternator feeds the + terminal.

So with any electrical part of the car - like your headlights, whenever there is a fault of some sort. You need to see if + electricity is reaching the headlight, when you switch on, but you also need to see if the headlight is connected electrically to the car body or ground.

You have to get a meter which reads volts and also eletrical resistance to do that.

Please let me know if this makes sense.
