Attention Crane HI-6S Ignition users who seek N2O Timing Retard (electronic people!)
The product of which I am speaking is the HI-6S ignition box. It is a versatile unit with options including 2 stage rev limiting, boost proportional timing retard, etc. I am currently using the box for n/a purposes. I am now wanting to use the box's timing retard options for nitrous use.
To use the box's timing retard option, you must purchase a ~$130 "timing ****". The wiring diagram can be seen at this link on page 20. The **** allows you to use a boost proportional, base adjustable, or switched adjustable timing retards. On page 4 of this document, read closely the "Retard Input" paragraph. It states that up 20 degrees of timing can be pulled by using a 2 watt, 1K Ohm potentiometer. It gives an example of such a jewel: A Clarostat RV4LAYSA102A. My question is.. Instead of buying a $130 contraption to retard the timing 3 different ways, can I just purchase this inexpensive potentiometer and put it in series with the n2o activated relay shown in figure 15? Buying the expensive TRC-2 **** seems like a waste of money. I would appreciate some electronic expert commentation! Thanks!
edit: The potentiometer costs $7.05 + $5 handling + $6.29 shipping = $18.34. You can see it at digikey here.
The relay can be purchased at any ole radio shack.

Absolutely! All they do it put a potentiometer in a box with a shiny ****, well you know the rest. By the way its in series with a switch, not a relay but you got it covered.

Great to hear! I can just go ahead and order everything up! I'm gonna even ad the niftty LED that comes on when the relay grounds out. This way you can tell for sure if the timing is being pulled for the nitrous. Ya, wether it's a switch or a relay, it's doing the same thing. The relay will just make the timing pull out right when the nitrous solenoids power up. If anybody has any questions on doing this, let me know because i've got it figured out on paper. If you contact me soon enough, we can order the potentiometer in bulk and save some money. Later!
