DIS ignition for thirdgens
Hi all,
Originally I posted this thread on the aftermarket board regarding Electromotive's DIS system.

Didn't get much feedback on it, maybe I posted it on the wrong board. Or maybe everyone thinks it's a crazy/stupid idea. I think a DIS ignition system for thirdgens would be awesome, though, so I've been doing some research.
The Electromotive system looks pretty good, but what I really want is a coil per cylinder system. I think the Electromotive system sells for aroud $600 - and then you have to buy a crank trigger system.
I came up with two options so far for true coil per cylinder ignition systems. The first is a new system produced by MSD. Check it out.

I priced this system at $1142.99 from Jegs - they have to special order it.
The second option is something I just discovered and it is more of a DIY setup. FAST (Speedpro) makes a system called e-dist, which they say can be used to controll multiple coils on any engine. The e-dist is a little over $300. I'm thinking LS1 coil packs controlled by the e-dist (and a crank trigger, of course) would be a pretty sweet setup. Check it out here:

Does anyone else find this interesting, or am I just nuts?

I like the MSD system but I'm shying away from it for a few reasons. First of all, the price. Almost $1150, and then I'd have to buy a crank trigger, that's another $230, so I'm close to $1370, more if I have to buy anything else. I'm pretty sure I can do it for less.
Also, the MSD system is CD - which is great for a single coil distributor system - but a DIS system is strong enough without CD. In my opinion it would be overkill. I could be wrong, but that's just what my feeling is.
I'm also not sure if the MSD unit will accept the ESC signal our cars put out.
IF the other system I have in mind were to work, lets look at what it would cost. $330 for the e-dist unit. LS1 coil packs are around $30 each from gmpartsdirect.com, so....$240 plus shipping. Crank trigger, $230 from MSD, or $160 from Electromotive. So far we are up to...$730. I'd need MSD's distributor plug for a cam signal, they're $75 I think. That leaves mounting brackets and a wiring harness for the coils. $50 bucks - that's a guess. $855.....$515 less than the MSD.
I'm in no rush to do this.....I'm just researching and planning. I have to contact FAST to find out if the edist will work with my car.

Keep us posted on the research and what you find out. I'm interested, it would go well with my LT1 intake conversions.
