Headlights wont open but they close
Headlights wont open but they close
I have a headlight problem with my 86 trans am.
In fact the problem has gone away and come back several times but it has been broken for a while now.
Heres the problem
In order to open the lights I have to turn on the switch. Then open the lights manually by turning the ***** on the light motors.
I have looked at diagrams and have somewhat of a good understanding of electronics but Where are all these relays located in the car. One part I am looking for is the isolation relay.
When I turn the lights off they shut ok. HELP! It's driving me crazy

The isolation relay is located o the passenger side radiator baffle, near the air filter box. Also check to see if there is +12 volts on each of the red wires at the individual headlight motor relays. Those wires need power in order to operate the headlights properly.
When you wind the motors up do you hear the motors running?
Hope this helps.

No problem, I have a '85 TA and I had tons of problems- bad motor, bad relays, bad wiring. They work perfectly now. Wound up wiring them directly to the battery. If you have any more problems or questions just ask.
Headlight problem fixed!
It was the isolation relay next to the radiator.
I checked it with a tester. When my light switch was off the relay sent power out of it to close the lights but when the switch was on the relay would break current that closes the lights letting me open them manually but it would not send the 12 volts out the pink wire to the left and right relays to open them. I tested this theory like this. First I turned on the switch, then I ran a wire from the battery to the pink wire coming out of the isolation relay. Bingo. The lights opened. (Keep in mind if anybody does this that once the lights are opened you must take the power away from the pink wire.) I put in a switch in my car temporally until the dealer can get me a new relay.
A new isolation relay costs $28.00....
Thanks for the help with the diagrams....:lala:
