84 T/A Headlight motor...?

Hey guys, I tried searching but couldn't find an exact answer. The drivers side headlight motor isn't working. I got a new motor, plugged it into the harness, and it just kept spinning, without having the lights on! The passenger side wasn't doing anything. Is this normal?

Also, whats the easiest way to get the motors out? From under the car?

Your headlight unit uses two small nylon gears. You can replace them with new nylon gears or get machined bronze ones.

Eckler's

or Rodney Dickman's Fiero Accessories

or here

in case you didn't read my post, i got a new motor already, but my question is when i plugged it in to the harness (without it actually being installed and bolted in), without the light switch on, the motor would spin until I unhooked it. Is this right?

Also, whats the best way of removing and installing the motor?

Thanks

There is a small relay, that is black with wires coming out of the bottom, (about the size of two boxes of raisins put together), mounted to the fender behind the headlight. Check to see if that is bad. You can do this by plugging your new motor on the the passenger side harness and see if it works right. If it does than that relay is most likely your problem. They are fairly cheap. Hope this helps.

I just replaced both of my headlight motors. As soon as I plugged mine in, they started spinning.
It's trying to close the headlight. Once the motor was in the assembly, it closed and stopped.
I can't help you on the best way to change them from under the car. I pulled the assemblies from the top side.

What did you have to do to pull the motors from the top?

I pulled the entire assembly. Here's how I did it:

First, I raised the headlights.
2nd, removed the plastic trim piece.
3rd, I removed the two top bolts.
4th, unplugged the headlight.
5th, removed the two bottom bolts. (These are kinda hard to get to.)
6th. I lifted the assembly out and unplugged the motor.

I swapped the motors out on the bench, and the reinstalled the assemblies.

The spinning is normal, the motors use a High Torque Switch inside the motor to stop it. When the motor encounters enough force to keep it from spinning(like when its installed and hits the body) the switch closes and the motor stops running. The relays send power through a different wire and this causes the motors to reverse. Press down on the motor **** and you should hear a faint click, that is the switch. If you remove the 3 screws on the side you can see it.

As far as removing them-
take the headlight out, remove the 3 bolts on the motor(one on top, two on bottem) Remove the nut that coonects the armature to the headlight pod, and disconnect the wiring. I find the easiest way to remove and install the motors is from the bottem.

Hope this helps,

Matt
