speedo cable or vss question
i got a 89RS and it has a cable for the speedo. im doing a LT1 swap and the trans im using has a VSS for the speedo. my question is what yrs did they put VSS in the camaros. i know that firebirds had them in 87 i think. but my 89 camaro has a cable.

The cable driven speedo has a pulse generator in the speedo itself which goes to a buffer module and to the ECM. You can double check on the trans board, but as far as I know you can simply pull out the VSS sender at the trans and use your old cable drive. If they are both 700r4 boxes either unit should fit into the trans. That would be the way I would go, otherwise you will need a new speedo head and some rewiring would be needed. 89 should be cable driven on all Camaros, 90 and up were electric.

thanks for the info, the trans im using is a 96 4L60E, its basicaly a 700R4 but all electric. street and performance makes a tail housing kit that lets you use the cable and still sends the signal to the ecm, but its over 300. maybe i can get a 90 dash unit and do the wiring.

You are going to have another bigger problem. To use an "E" you will need a control module if you are installing it into a car that didn't have the E version. Newer GM vehicles use a PCM as opposed to the ECM the TG's have. Without a control module all you will get is reverse and second gear unless you place 12 volts to certain pin connections at the trans and activate the shift solenoids, but even if you do that you will destroy the trans without the electronic control module that is sold seperately for cars without a PCM. The module runs close to $800 and there is no way around not using one.
