electric fuel pump

anyone here know how to check electric fuel pump mounted in the gas tank for electrical problems? wiring, sensors, plugs, fuses etc...? any info and/or wiring diagrams would be appreciated. I have an 87 Z-28 305 TPI, I replaced the pump a few years ago and haven't put too many miles on the car since. it was running fine and one day just wouldn't fire up and I didn't hear the pump come on so I'm thinking it's electrical

there are 2 pins on the aldl you need to jump together, nut i dont remember what the are. if you search on the tpi board it should tell you, or a haynes manual will have it.

Apply +12v to the 'g' terminal of the ALDL to see if that will turn the pump.

Your '87 should be similar to my former '85 Z28. There is an inline fuse in the fuel pump power wire. On my car it was located on the other side of the body behind the rear seats (trace the wire under the carpet through a hole behind the seats). Can't remember if it was accessable from inside the car or not. I think I was able to pull the fuse and fuse holder through the hole in the body. Unfortunately, I ended up having to replace the pump.

Doesn't turning the key to the 'on' position have the same effect?

Yes and no. The ECM will 'prime' the pump for roughly 2 seconds when you turn the key on but, the ECM only switches the relay on or off. The test terminal on the ALDL bypasses the relay which can help you determine weather the relay has gone bad or the pump.
