need help with driving lights

im trying to wire my driving lights to make them come on when i turn the ignition on. the catch is that i still want to be able to turn them off by the switch. i tried to figure it out the other day, i figured it would be like most switches, you know, one wire in on wire out, yeah right. anyways, which wires do i hook where to accomplish my goal. i already have a wire for ignition power ran to the switch, i just need to know which wires to hook where.

thanks,

david

You will need a relay to do the job. Get a 30 ampre 12 volt SPST relay from Radio Shack (275-226) for $6. Connect the pole (terminal 30) to the orange wire going to the head light switch. Connect the NO contact (terminal 87) to the brown wire going to the head light switch. Connect one side of the relay coil (terminal 85) to chassis ground. Connect the other side of the relay coil (terminal 86) to an ignition power source - or your switch, if you would like to be able to disable the "run lights on with ign power" feature.

If you would like to be able to turn the lights on & off manually, as well, then connect terminal 86 of the relay to one terminal of the on - off (SPST) switch, and connect the other terminal of the switch to an ign power source - use the wire coming from the gauges fuse, which is a pink / black wire.

As indicated above, use the orange wire and the brown wire going to the stock light switch. There should be 7 wires going to the light switch. Red = Batt pwr in, Org = Running light fused pwr in, Bn = Running lights, YL = Head lights, Gn = Inst lights, Blk = Gnd, Wht = Courtesy Lights. I'll e-mail you a copy of the light switch schematic.
