Is it safe to replace a fusible link with a fuse?

A while back I determined my alternator was overcharging because the fusible link in the voltage sensing wire was blown. I replaced it with a 20A fuse in a weather proof case. Is this safe, or should I install another fusible link? If so, what rating as I forgot the rating of the one I took out.

It is perfectly fine to use a fuse. The difference primarily between fuses and links is that links are generally used in circuits that are either hard to get to or that normally carry high current. Fuses depending on thier size can run hot and melt when carrying high current for extended periods of time. Links can be purchased at any decent parts supplier. My diagrams show the sense wire going to the fuse panel under the dash.
