Yes, it can be rebuilt. You can take it apart and replace the pickup coil, module, check endplay etc.

It's usually WELL Worth the time. I got lazy when I Was having some weird idle / running problems, so I paid @ $100 for a rebuilt one and tried it, as I was trying to eliminate the actual problem.

It improved the smoothness of the car a great deal.

would a distributor be a cause for very bad throttle response?
problem is when im at an idle or low RPM and i mash the gas to floor it bucks and snorts then jumps and then the RPMs fly up and i go forward. so if i rebuild my distributor would this solve my problem?

Probably not. When you tromp on it and it bogs typically it is something to do with fuel/air delivery. Assuming base timing is OK look at other things. Check TPS reference voltage setting, base timing and look for vacuum leaks. Also check EGR system especially the EGR valve. They can get carboned up causing sometimes poor idle and hesitation when you jump on it. As always make sure the TB is clean, fuel pressure and the like. Check for codes also even if you are not getting an SES light. Unfortunately these types of problems are sometimes the most difficult to find. Just be slow and methodical.
