Instrument cluster problems on 86 Berlinetta

I purchased an '86 Berlinetta that wasn't running. I replaced the computer, 1 relay by the battery, fan switch, ignition switch, & did a tune-up. The engine started easily, but ran rough. The dash was partially taken apart . The gauges worked, but the digital speed-o & tach don't work at all, & the information center lights only partially worked. I found & bought a cluster from a junkyard. When I installed the "NEW" cluster I have almost the same problem, the gauges still work, the information center lights seem to be working "OK", but still no speed-o or tach, or turn indicators, or odometer (anything digital) in the center of the cluster. CAN ANYBODY HELP???????

Bad Cluster

You Have 2 bad clusters - its that simple. I have seen it a thousand times....... Since you are not describing any "lighting" issues than I can almost be certain the dashes are bad. Is your car a V6 or a V8 ?

I can get you a working cluster,...... If your interested in it than E-Mail me for details.

P.S. Include your ZIP code in your reply.

Electronic tach/speed-o

Is there a way to test the clusters that I have, or to check the wiring at the plug for proper voltage, etc? I can look at one cluster & see a burned spot on the display, but the other cluster "LOOKS" OK. I really don't want to buy another dash cluster & try "POT LUCK" if it's going to work. Besides I paid $210.00 for the one that I just bought & it was shipped from Abilene,TX to a camaro/firebird place in Little Rock Arkansas, & then to me, which took over a week. Or is there any aftermarket cluster available that will fit an 86 berlinetta

Hi Rob,.....

Sure - You can test the wiring at the plug. that would tell you that your cluster is getting power and signals from the sending units. If you want detailed Wiring info about your Berlinetta talk to Mike M......... he sells a CD containing all the Berlinetta Wiring diagrams. Find his E-Mail address here :

http://berlinetta.info/manual.htm

I have already offered to test your dash(s) for you for free. Your only expense would be shipping it back & forth. Since you just spent over $200 on the last replacement dash you should contact the people that sold it to you and give them a piece of your mind !

There are a few spots on the berinetta digital panel that should look "burnt". That's not an indication that the dash is problematic.

No - There is no aftermarket dash cluster availible for the Berlinetta. You CAN use individual aftermarket gauges ( speedo/Tach/Oil pressure, etc... ) But you will need to custimize your existing dash to accomodate them.

'86 dash

Thanks for your help, I've contacted Mike to get a copy of the cd, & I've called the place that I bought the dash from, They said that they would check to see if there was anything that controls the digital part of the dash. You would think that a place that specializes in Camaros would know something like that!! I'm about ready to get rid of this car, especially if all of my problems are this hard: confused: Rob
