ALT. Question
Hello all,
I have a 1989 Firebird, 305. I installed a supercharger (ATI P1SC) and an Accel Superram with Gen VII+. When ever I start the car the volt meter reads about 14-15 volts, however once the car warms up and I am at idle the volt meter drops down to 11-12 volts. I just replaced the alt with a HP alt built by a local ALT shop. If I am correct, isnt the voltage regulator suppose to keep the volatage approx the same at all times. Any information or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Mine does it also. My last Alt. did this too but not as much as my new 110A does. Basically the voltmeters in our cars are hardly accurate. When my gauge is reading 17v, my DVM shows about 15.7v from the + pole on the Alt. Then when it seems to normalize after initial warm up the guage is showing 12v, while the DVM shows about 14.4v, which I feel is exactly where I wanna be.
Someone else can probably explain the reason for the initial high voltage, but I can say that it shouldn't be a reason for concern. If anything it's a blessing because your battery could use an early morning breakfast anyway.
