I just removed the lower plastic cover with the brushes and all from my passenger side window motor... (I'm doing all this with the motor still in the door, BTW..) It's all caked up with black gooey stuff. The brushes are about 1/4" in length and aren't cracked or chipped. I have cleaned them up but my question deals with all that black sticky stuff. Does this stuff mean the motor is shot or do I just clean the stuff off, install new brushes, put in new grease and go on? I don't want to have to replace the motor but I will if this black ooze means the motor is junk.
Second, do I need to replace these brushes? I'm not sure how new ones look compared to these. Pic below...

Never mind...it's just a lot of grease and carbon dust all mixed up.
