Speedometer & power window stopped working suddenly
Speedometer & power window stopped working suddenly
My speedometer suddenly stopped working recently. It worked flawlessly before, it never fluctuated or gave me any other problems. The same goes for my passenger side window.
I was removing wires and crap here and there and when I hooked everything back up those two weren't working. (Everything was put back exactly the same as before.)
I think the window is just a bad switch but I never had trouble with it before at all, and it looks okay. The driver's side works fine. What would make this stop working suddenly?
As for the speedometer, the only thing that I touched was something with 2 harnesses going into it, each with a lot of wires, under the hood right next to 3 relays on the drivers side. (Around where the gauges are.) I unplugged that and plugged it back in a week ago I think. (Haven't driven my car for like a month until today.) If this isn't related, what is that thing I unplugged?
The only other thing I could think of, is that I put in crappy *** speakers not long ago and it doesn't quite fit perfectly in the drivers side dash hole. It buzzes like mad even when it's soft, and it does touch something down there. Could the vibration shake a speedometer cable loose?
I have a '91 firebird (base, v6 model). Also, when I say the speedometer/window "stopped working, " I mean that they don't do anything at all. No fluctuating/noise, etc. What could cause these things?
Thanks,
Scott

Also, what is the little metal box under the passenger side of the dash? I never noticed it before, but I heard it "whirring" the other day with the key on. Is that some kind of computer? Is that necessary? If I touched it without "grounding myself" could that damage it? My '91 no longer has the FI 3.1, it has a carbed 355, so I'm trying to find out what is needed for the car to operate and what isn't.
I also unplugged every fuse that I didn't think the car needed except for two or three. (Didn't know what they did.) I don't need the ECM fuse, or VATS, or crap like that, right?
I don't have my car here, but I think the few that I wanted to figure out were LID, and... uhm... I can't remember the other one or two. Thanks again!
