What voltage are you getting out of the alternator when the vehicle is idling, heater on high, and headlights on?
Really need a voltmeter to check this.
You can measure off the battery terminals, and if it's over 12 volts (that would be low, should be at least 12.8 or so) then I wouldn't worry about the alternator, unless it is an intermittent problem.
The "right" way to measure alternator voltage output is off of the alt. itself, but sometimes it's hard to get to the terminals. But if your battery is seeing 12+ V under the above conditions, it's not likely your alternator is the problem.
Probably would help to describe the problem a bit more though too. But voltage readings don't lie, regardless of symptoms.
