3 relays???? on the firewayy near the brake booster, can they be removed?
Ok, finally got the car back to the house(was in storage for 3+years, it's a long story!) and was trying to clean up the engine compartment wiring so I can drop the motor in. I have been trimming the old wiring harness bits at a time making sure that I keep the starter soleniod wire intact as well as the wipers, etc. Anyway, I'm almost at the brake boster, and I noticed 3 relay boxes?? on the firewall by the brake booster. Just curious to know what they are for and if I should keep them. Also, like I said before, I kept the starter soleniod wire(purple I think, I am colorblind don't laugh!). But what are the other wires that have fusible links on them? What do they do? One of them has a ring terminal with two wires and two fusible links on them and one goes to the harness on the passenger side where the ECM was, and the other side runs up the harness into the driver's side but I don't know where it goes. Thanks for any info with these issues. Paul Moore

i'm gonna assume you have dual fans on your radiator? if so, the three relays are for (1) cooling fan, (2) cooling fan, (3) fuel pump. yes, you need them, unless you're modifying things (like direct wiring your fans, etc.)

also, as for the other wires you asked about with the fusible links and ring terminals, they all go to the big lug on the starter where the battery (+) lead hooks up to, i'm pretty sure... if they have the 3/8" size terminal... the purple wire should have a small ring terminal, goes to the solenoid. i'm just speaking from current experience right now, as mine is all torn apart, as well, and i can recall what i've done. hope this helps.

Well, the car was a V6 originally(a 2.8L) and it did not have dual fans. I am running a carb, so I don't need the fuel pump relay then obviously. Now as far as the other 2 go, one would be for the cooling fan and the other would be for what?(seeing as how I don't have dual fans) Thanks, Paul Moore

If your car was a 1990 or later model then thunderstick would be correct in the identification of those relays. Since your profile mentions a 88 model, those relays would be the fuel pump relay, MAF Sensor power relay, MAF Sensor burn-off relay. Since you are now running a carb'ed engine you no longer need the relays for the MAF. If you still have the in-tank fuel pump you will possibly still need the fuel pump relay unless you are no longer using the computer (ECM).
