i bought my car a few months ago and the previous owner had a MSD 6AL ignition box in it, im just wondering what this really does for me and if its a good box

it is a high energy ignition. it provides a better spark to burn fuel completely. 6al has a "chip" in the box that you can change so you wont overrev the engine.
