Brakes Shorting Out

Checked the fuse and it was blown, replaced it with another 20 amp fuse. Step on the brakes and the fuse blows.

I'll be going through the lamps in a bit.

Anything else I should be looking at?

Yes, in addition to checking to make sure you have the right bulbs in there and that there isn't a problem with the sockets. You might want to make sure there isn't a bare wire in the circuit touching metal. The fuse also services the hazard flasher and audio warning unit in the convenience center.

There were several bulbs burnt out. Replaced all bulbs in the rear, and still the same problem. And they are the correct bulbs.

I did notice the sockets for the park/turn lights seem to be filled with something. Looks like dried mud to me. One of the old bulbs even had this gunk inside the bulb. And it's not just the socket but the whole assembly. I opened one of them, and this gunk is completely packed inside.

So is the next step cleaning the gunk out all the sockets?

And I assume the audio warning unit is for lights on and/or key in the ignition/door open??

Thanks for the help.

thanks for the help. Got all the sockets cleaned out. The gunk had the consistency and color of peanut butter.... How it got there I have no clue.

While poking around under the dash I also noticed the cruise control brake switch was broke. So I unplugged that as well. Don't know if that had anything to do with my problem.

All the rear lights work now, so I'll be able to drive this on the road now. Now to replace that switch and get the cruise control working. Then installing a stereo (there's a mass of wires where the stereo used to be.)

It was probably put there at the factory to keep moisture out. Over a period of time that stuff will harden almost like plastic.

Thanks, that's what I thinking, I've never seen it look like it did though.

Should I use dielectric grease or something to prevent water fromgetting in there.

that sounds like old white lube.. it helps keep moisture out but over 20 years it will harden like that.
