speed sensor

Can someone tell me how the speed sensor affects the performance of the car? Will it be a problem if it's not hooked up?

your cars speedometer won't work if it isn't hooked up.

With a 90 to 92, yes that is correct because the speed sensor is electronic. However the speed sensor on 89 and older is cable driven with the optical speed sensor behind the gauge cluster.

Or does anyone know if the optical speed sensor sends the same signal as the electronic?

The optical sensor from what I've read is infra-red that is attached to the instrument cluster. The electronic one is gear driven in the tranny.

Right I understand that, but do they send the same signal to the computer? As in voltage or whatever?
