Questions about ECM

Help! I need you all to give me some advice.

Mechanic says I need to replace the ECM. I would like to know if I REALLY need to replace the ECM, or can I just chip it?

If I do need to replace the ECM, does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can find one? I feel like I've been all over town and all over the internet and I still can't locate this part.

I appreciate any suggestions/tips, etc.

Thanks all!

You didn't really explain why the mechanic said this.

Your words seem to indicate you think a "chip" will fix something, did you make changes to the engine or something?

Thanks for your reply.

By the term "chip" I meant replace the computer chip inside the ECM with an aftermarket computer chip. Turned out I needed the entire ECM.

Finally found the part and replaced it. Received a suggestion from a guy in a race shop that recommenced the Hypertech chips w/Thermomaster system. I might also replace the fan blade itself.

Obviously, I'm new to restoring cars, and I'd hoped that I could get some advice that could take my learning curve from here (_______________) to here (______).

Thanks,

Don't spend a lot of money on one of those generic "one size fits all" Hypertech chips. You can get the stuff to burn your own custom chips for like $65..

By the phrase "a lot of money" he probably meant anything more than the $2.35 mailing cost. Anything beyond that is a complete waste. A HyperScrap PROM has worked out very well for me - As a lesson to NOT use generic programs while it doubles as a paperweight on my desk.

Get a PROM programmer, download the software, and learn to build your own programs with a little help from your friends at the DIY PROM board. It's so easy, even I can do it.
