Installing a hatch switch.
I have a 1987 Camaro RS and want to install a hatch switch. I think the 87 did not come with a switch. To open the hatch you use a key.
My question is, can anyone tell me if I can install a release switch for a 87 and how to install it correctly. I'm not sure but I think they installed a hatch switch beginning with the 88 Camaros.
Thanks

Actually the 87 camaros did come with the hatch release switch. Only the low end (bare bones) model came with out the hatch release switch.

I just put a switch in my '87.
I got the switch, switch harness and relay off of ebay.
Used a dremel tool to cut out the hole in the console for the switch.
There was already a connector in the console to plug the switch/relay harness into.
Had to run a wire back to the hatch as there wasn't one in the harness. This was the only PITA of the whole thing.
Bought a used release solenoid for the latch from TDS. You just replace the manual release with it.
edit:afaik the release switch was part of a larger option package, although it could be deleted.
My car was manual everything. I've added the hatch release and power door locks.
