VATS box location?

90 Irocs have the vats don't they? What all needs to be switched with the column for the ignition to work? Is there a box for the vats mounted somewhere in the dash? Where is it?
Thanks

Brad

Can you give us a little background as to what you are trying to do here. That way we can give you a better answer.

the VATS column is identical to a non-VATS one, except the ignition lock cyl has two very thin wires coming from it... run thoes wires down the column, and connect to the connector under dash.

these thin wires are usually white or gray, if memory serves me correctly.
they're the only to thin, single wires leaving the column.

eh, not exactly.

if you're putting the old lock cyl in the new column, you're all set.

see, the "chip" on the key is a resistor. so if the "chip" resistance of the old key and the new key match, then that key can be used on the car.

if you're using the new columns lock cyl, and its VATS, and the key matches, you're set.

if you're using the new columns lock cyl, and its VATS, and the key does not match, you can have a key cut to work in the new lock cyl, but get it with the old vats chip resistance... make sense? i hope i explained that clearly...

if you're using the new columns lock cyl, and NOT VATS, then you need to swap a VATS one in(like your old one), pull the wires thru, and then it'll work.

In my post earlier, I asked what he intended to do since he is showing a 88 Iroc in his profile. This car did not have VATS in it originally, is he trying to install the VATS sytem in it. If he is then he will need the VATS control module, the starter enable relay, a computer chip with the VATS enabled feature, and all the associated wiring. He will also need a key that the VATS control module will recognize.

sorry trickster, What im doing is this. I have a wrecked 90 iroc, and I just sold the column out of it to a guy with I believe a 92. Do I need to find and rip out the box inside the dash to give to him? Or will his old box work with the new column?
Sorry for not explaining better the first time.

Not a problem, all he has to do is take his old column out and put the new one in. If you still have the keys to that column I would give them to him so he can get a key cut with his original resistance value. Or else he can take the lock cylinder out of his steering column and put in the new column. If that is not what he would like to do, then you can sell him the VATS control module from the 90 IROC. They go for $300.00 or more from the dealership. It is located by the drivers right knee on the firewall beneath the defrost vents.
