speedometer and gas gauge not working

this question might sound extremely stupid but, i have an 86 IROC originally TPI 305. it was converted over to carburetor and both the speedometer and gas gauge are not working. i was told by the guy who was working on my car (i had lots of electrical problems with it at the start) that i could NOT get either one working cause the previous owner had removed the electrical wiring and i guess the ECU (?) from the car.....i thought the speedo would be as simple as the cable from the tranny to the gauge and the gas gauge maybe a malfunctioning float assy (?). anyway, can anyone help me? id like to get my IROC running soon.....thank you.

I've got the same exact problem. I think we are missing a hot lead somewhere. If you follow the fuel gauge wiring back you can see where it goes through the floor (above the diff). The pink wire is signal, the black ground, and the brown is hot (in my 86 camaro). Problem is... the brown *isn't* hot... so something is supposed to set this wire hot and it's not happening.
