VATS Resistor Fix Questions

I need to do the VATS resistor fix on my sons 91 RS. Radio shack didnt have one single resistor to match the keys resistance which measured 11610 ohms. I measured going through the 2 contact points, one on each side of the key.
I put 4 resistors in series together within 10 ohms. Will this work instead of 1 single resistor? Where did anyone get a single resistor to fit theirs? I would like to find one. Does this 11610 ohm value of mine seem common or close to the value anyone else has found?
Radio Shack said I could probably use a potentiometer and dial it in to the correct resistance with a digital ohmeter, because a potentiometer is adjustable. Then You could leave it set there forever or adjust it to make the car not start if you want extra security or your teenage kid gets his driving privileges removed!
One more thing... can the fix be done somehow at the fuse box? Some kind of resistor/fuse or potentiometer /fuse? What an invention! Just an idea! How about the right wadd of tin foil? LOL ! Just kidding Thanks in advance!

My 89 key was 1470 used 1.5k resistor. The 98 was 3008 and here I used a 3.3k resistor. You have a 15 % + or - factor to play with. But yes you could tag them in series to get the right value. The pot will work, but if it had no markings and got turned with out meter to reset could be stranded again. Pull the under dash panels find the wire and install there. I stripped back some wire soldered it in there then taped good. Seems Gm would design the switch so that the wire would not break. Go figure.
