My RPM is going nuts. Even at idle it jumps around like crazy.

When driving down the road (at any speed), my RPM will bounce around between 1000 and 2500. But my speed remains unchanged and my engine doesn't rev up according to the RPM gauge...so the engine isn't completely affected by what the RPM is saying. Although, sometimes when it does this jumping around (its a fast bouncing of the needle and not a slow thing), if feels like its trying to jump gear or losing power.

Now, I've installed a new battery, I've replaced the plug wires (because some had been burnt a lil from getting against the manifold). So I'm stumped.

It doesn't do this all the time. Sometimes it will skip a day and run like a brand new car. Orther days, I'm almost scared its going to kill over along interstate.
