timing question
hi, names steve, new to board. this site is great. neway, i have a 89 camaro rs, i just got it a week ago. back fired thru intake everytime i stomped the gas. it has a 350 thats .020 over, edelbrock alum 2.02/1.60 heads and an edelbrock performer tbi intake. it has a holley 650 tbi unit on it. he didnt have the cam card and doesnt remember the specs. he said about 9.7:1 compression. hypereutectic pistons, cast bottom end. i got it home and found a hypertech chip in it. 2 pins were bent over from being forced into pcm. car came with 3 extra tbichip.com chips. i tried a tbi chip and it still backfired. i checked timing, it was 2 degrees retarded. i unplugged base timing connector to check the base timing. there are no base timing stickers under the hood. i kept advancing the timing until it didnt back fire and ran good. its at 20 degrees base timing, with connector unplugged. it runs well right now, except for the erratic idle i believe due to the tbichips.com chip. the hypertech chip has a smooth idle once i fixed the pins, but it runs lean midrange. does 20 degrees base timing sound right at all? i know im screwed without a cam card. whole situation sux cuz my dad was a chevy small block guru, but he passed this past xmas eve, so this is my first experience tuning one. any help is appreciated!
