Re: carb swap ? how bad will it run????

well the 600 will use more fuel than the Q jet did and will take some modifications to connect to the car, including fuel line work and linkage work and choke wiring work and so on

you will need a distributor that is non computer, from any small block or big block chevy engine without computer,

the vacuum hose connects to ported vacuum source

alot of the times on stock engines i dont even connect it and it runs great, the mechnical advance advances it enough apparently

good luck

Re: carb swap ? how bad will it run????

My 83 Trans Am had electronic carb on it when I got it and sensors were missing so I replaced it with the older style q-jet(which I think is far superior to edelbrock which I've also had), and the car ran fine with the mechanical carb and computer controlled HEI. My fuel mileage stayed about the same at 13 mpg.

I recently made the complete jump to non-computer controlled car, i bought a brand new distributor from ebay for $60 shipped. I got a nice unit too. Dont waste your time with used crap when you can have new for $60. Mine has worked great, and was the simplest mod I ever did. The stock wiring will plug right in too if you get the right one.

The one I got for my 305 was a High Performance 65,000 volt control module complete HEI distributor with coil, cap, and rotor, and has adjustable vacuum advance. If you do this swap you should get a recurve kit. Set your base timing to about 12 or 14 degree's.

Just go on ebay and search "GM HEI distributor" and you will get hundreds of hits.
