any ideas why my fuel pump relay lasts only about a year before needing replacing.

starts going gradually, symptoms are car starts acting like its not getting fuel when on quarter tank, then when half full then eventually will start & die even when full.

solved by repalcing the relay but only lasts about a year.

91 350 tpi auto.

how easy is it to replace the fuel pump in the tank, does the tank have to come out to do so?

I've had alot of problems with my fuel pump relay. At first we pinned it on the fuel pump, and ended up replacing it. The first time it's pretty time consuming, but we had a lift so that made it alot easier, I think the biggest problem we had was actually getting the tank out, the filler neck is a beeeotch :-p Anyway we replaced the pump put everything back lowered the car, and still no start... we found out that the pump we got from the auto store was a bum pump, which sucked, we had to go back get another one, drop the tank AGAIN replace the pump, put everything back, ( you get pretty good at this when you do it twice in one day :-p) this time the pump was working but still wasn't priming anything... we replaced the oil pressure switch, still nothing, after all that time, we ended up pinning it to the fuel pump relay, which I have had ALOT of problems with in the past, and was getting very tired of it so, I ended up bypassing the relay, and hooking it up to a toggle switch. Get in the car, flip the toggle, fuel pump primes, start it, flip the switch off, and it's fine. Haven't had a problem since.
