Oil gauge

My oil gauge goes hard over as soon as I turn the car on (86 350 4bbl) as of now the previouse owner has put an oil gauge under the dash which I would like to remove...would I be better of fixing the orginal? if so how? or my other option was to go with a new gauge from auto meter and throw it up on the piller? I think the auto meter would be more reliable but I'm not sure if I want some thing up there or not.

Re: Oil gauge

On my 85 T/A the stock oil gauge does the same thing. You'd have to get a stock sender and screw it in behind the intake manifold. There should be a brown wire with a funny connector on it ending somewhere behind the intake. I personally got an Autometer 3 gauge A-Pillar pod and put an Oil Pressure, Boost / Vacuum, and A/F Ratio. I think it looks pretty darn good if I say so... and the Autometer Oil Pres. gauge is always spot on and reliable... been in my car for 5 years. I got the Carbon Fiber backed gauges just cuz they are a close match to the stock gauge cluster background.

Re: Oil gauge

I was looking at the singal pillar pod and putting an autometer oil gauge in it just beacause the chepo one under the dash looks like crap plus it's not lighted so it does nothing at night time. But I would like to keep things as stock looking as I can, although I do like the reliablity of the autometer. So I wonder if the problem is in the stock gauge? cause the after market one works fine.

Re: Oil gauge

I'm pretty sure you're gonna need the stock style sender. Just for giggles one day I hooked my stock wire up the Autometer sender and it didn't work right. I can't imagine the stock sender being very expensive from AutoZone. It'd be worth a shot if you want to keep the stock look. My 406 makes more oil pressure than the stock gauge can handle... so I kinda need the Autometer. If you need help wiring the gauge up so it lights up shoot me a line... I drew a wiring diagram specifically for F-Bodies.
