Weird headlight/gauge short?

Well, this ones a little odd to me...

The trouble I'm having is when I go to turn my headlights/running liights on
when i pull the **** into either position, some of my gauges will either short out and max out (such as my RPM gauge going straight to 7,000) or just die completely. Along with that the lights behind the gauges wont come on, but the lights indicating the turn signals are on, will be on constantly, both of them.

Now, the guy I bought my camaro from had done a HACK job putting in an alarm that didn't even work(at least by time I got to it) so I tried to completely remove it, which I did but I think it's still being shorted out someplace. Although removing it did give me a deffinate improvement

This is a little(alot"cough") annoying to drive with at night, considering I have the 5 speed and like to keep an eye on my RPM's (don't ask why, i just do for some reason, lol)

Some a wiring diagram of some sort, or clear explanation would GREATLY be appreciated.

Just as a note though, my headlights work fine, but it seems to affect one of my tailights from what friends tell me, and when i use my turn signals the gauges will jump all over the place.

Thanks guys,
Jessie

pull your gauge cluster out and take a look at your connections on the panel. More than likely there are some wires touching that shouldn't be.

Also in the sticky above called "possible useful link" there are great wiring diagrams from autozone website.

Ok well I found my bad connection to the lighting, and fixed the short...

Although in the process I created a much bigger problem.
I had removed all my gauges (including taking apart my speedo[im a rookie])
Well, using what common sense I have, Pulling the needle off I made sure it lined up with the little white mark that it usualy sits on when the car is off.
along with everyother geared part inside...
then I popped the gear cable from the back, and removed my gauge cluster and fixed the problem in the wiring.
But after reasembling, I took her around the block and didn't get anything on the speedo...

I need this fixed ASAP, for now since I have the T-5 I can get by, by telling my speed roughly from what RPM's and what gear im in

but I got it back on tight, yet still my speed will jump between 35-40 when im doing about 30...
and if it helps any, i hear this sort of ticking noise comming from the speedo.

serious help needed...please?

Re: Weird headlight/gauge short?

Kinda sounds like the cable is still not happy with the way it's installed. It might be binding up somewhere. When you pulled the cluster out the slack to get at the back had to come from somewhere, either it needs fed back out or it may be kinked somewhere between the fire wall and the tranny, look to see if it feeds thru a hold down clip and just needs put back where it used to stay.

Re: Weird headlight/gauge short?

Hey guys, I got the speedo issue fixed.
I actually went to the junkyard this morning, I remembered that there was an IROC playing sleeping beauty under a tree (a real discrace considering externaly the car is georgous)
Anyways... I snagged the 145 gauge from it and got'er for $10 (along with a couple pocket items which came in handy)

Well, my question is...
My car had a 115 gauge on it, that is untill i basicly broke it.
the 145 gauge SEEMS to be accurate to within 5mph which isn't bad
but how difficult would it be to get and replace the drive gear for it?
I've done a little research around the forums and really couldn't find anything..

also just a little curious, how much would the 145 gauge go for?
I know they're a little rare and can go for a few bucks. because I'd be willing to sell it and go scavenging around for a new 115.

P.S. just a general thank you for all the help everyone on the site has given me! I'd be pretty lost sometimes without'chya

Re: Weird headlight/gauge short?

Keep searching the threads, I know I've seen the fix before and it had more to do with changing the VSS on the back of the cluster I think. As far as I know its not necessary to change anything on the speedo unit itself. Are you running stock size tires? If not check out ntb.com they have a calculator that lets you select what was stock for your car then put in the new size your running and it tells you ruffly what the difference on your odometer should be.

Re: Weird headlight/gauge short?

5mph isn't that bad but if you feel a need to get it more accurate there is a sticky in the transmission board called "t-5 drive/driven gears" it has the speedo ratios you'll need, you do need to know your rear end ratio.

The vss on the back of the cluster doesn't have anything to do with the display speed, it merely tells the ecm that the car is moving.

also if it wasn't off with the 115 it shouldn't be off now.

Re: Weird headlight/gauge short?

Thanks for the help!
I'll look more into new tranny gears for it now.

and actually, its more like 10 off, felt like 5 though, confirmed it today.

Re: Weird headlight/gauge short?

Well, after sticking with the ~10mph off problem. After driving around for about a week, it actually seems to be more accurate?

Is this possible?

How I know this is because, when I swapped in the 145 speedo. I could go 20 and be doing 30
I know I'm doing 30 when I'm in 4th gear, and running ~1900RPMs
before it would do 20 @ 4th-1900RPMs
now it tells me 25 @ th-1900

whats up with that??
