yet another, but different, GTA digital dash question

I searched but could only find information on swapping the whole thing, systems monitor included, into a car. So here goes:

Got a 1987 GTA, with the 5.7 in it. I wish it had the digital dash. My buddy has one and it is the neatest thing I have ever seen. I'm in love with it. So, I want one for my car.

Found one on here from a member. This is where my question gets a little different. In theory, I would doubt that Pontiac would make two entirely different dashes for that cluster. It appears to me that it SHOULD physically bolt-up in place of the regular gauges. So, in theory, is it possible to use the guages and odometer only, and junk the systems monitor? Never been a fan of that part, my buddy's car is always telling him he has a light out when he doesn't. I could always make a plate for it, for fan switches or something.

Also, it it possible to either a.) repin the connector in the dash for it or b/) will the guages themselves work without any mods? Also, I read somewhere that those guages actually use sensors instead of regular sending units for stuff, can anyone confirm this?

BTW, not switching the heater box or controls for this. Mine work fine, see no reason to spend extra money for something I don't care about changing.

Looking forward to any advice, hopefully my idea is kosher. Thanks!
