OK my kids just broke my car- now what?
OK my kids just broke my car- now what?
I was having trouble with the bright lights coming on so I had him pulling back the signal stock while I watched and looked under the car and he pulled too hard and now it feels like he broke the thing altogether.
The turn signals still work and so do the lights but the brights don't come on. Any advice, will I have to chg out the whole thing? thanks

can't "activate" brights at all? as in off or on? does it feel like the stalk is "sloppy"? sounds like maybe the high beam switch is loose on the column, hopefully the rod didn't fall out. it's a pita to get to, though.

what year is your car? i don't know if they're all the same, but mine is down (near the floorboard almost) on the column, roundabout the 10:00 position. you'll see it, has a long rod attached to it (hopefully still). sometimes they (rod) come out, sometimes switch is just loose on the column. might have to lower the column to gain better access to it.

What exactly do I need to remove to be able to access this? I have had bad experiences in the past with removed plastic panels with clips, having them break, etc. I would like to know what I'm doing beforehand.

gotta remove the knee panel... then may have to drop the column, just a couple of nuts. the hi/lo switch is on a metal bracket, follow the rod down the column. if you have to reinstall the rod, hopefully someone else can jump on board here, cuz i don't know how to do that with it being inside the covers. probably not that difficult, tho. didn't mean to leave you hanging last night, but had to get off here.

Thanks I am trying to get it ready to sell - just bought it and wife thinks it is too much of a muscle car for her to drive so I need to get it inspection ready and this is the only thing holding me back- no bright lights. I will look at it today and will definitely need some help again when I get the plate off. Thanks again!

Have you done a search yet? It would have popped out this tech article on how to adjust the hi/lo beam switch: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=16
Hope this helps.

Thanks thought I had searched pretty well but may have been just looking under bright lights etc not those specific terms...I will check it out and get back to you- thanks for being so helpful.
Re: OK my kids just broke my car- now what?
OK I read the article in the link above and I now have the panel off and am looking for those two screws that allow me to adjust the hi /lo beam switch- I can only feel one and can't even see the other...what am I doing wrong?
Re: OK my kids just broke my car- now what?
Yep found the screws, loosened them, moved the switch but the rod still does not hit it so I think it is not the switch but rather the turn signal stick and the way it moves the rod. Will I have to pull the steering wheel then? If so thinking about just calling my mechanic to see what he would charge to fix the thing.
Re: OK my kids just broke my car- now what?
OK mechanic said worst case would be $225 to repair so if you have done this job before then let me know if it is really hard- don't want to get it torn down and not be able to fix it or even be able to drive it to the shop for repair without having it towed...any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

You can rent the steering wheel puller at AutoZone for free (well, you pay for it but you get all the money back upon return) and pull the steering wheel in a few minutes.
If your multifunction is broken, it costs $28. Not sure about the price of the turn signal "stalk". You might have a good luck here on TGO with a used part. Watch out for cruise and no-cruise stalk, though.
Hope this helps.
