Electric Fuel pump (Holley Red) and relay harness question

Hey guys,

I finally installed my Holley electric fuel pump this weekend but have a question about the relay that I got to go with it. On the relay, I have a yellow wire that's supposed to go to the on/off or ignition switch. Only problem is, I can't figure out which wire in the engine harness is the ignition wire (I'm not looking for always on as I"m pretty sure this wire is supposed to go "hot" when you turn on the ignition). Could i use the terminal on the starter or should I actually find the ignition power line? Does anyone have a picture of it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Why can't you use the factory relay and connect your new pump directly to the tan/white wire on it?

Sorry, it's an 84 T/A and originally had a mechanical pump so I have no relay or anything like that for an electric pump. The new engine I'm putting in isn't drilled for a mechanical pump so I have run all my own wiring for the electric one. I've got it all finished except for this wire which confuses me as to where I should hook it up.

Well, the starter wire won't work as that is only hot when the key is turned to crank the engine. Most pink/black wires are hot in run and start. Here are some likely candidates where you should find one:

AIR diverter valve
AIR select valve
EGR solenoid
Mixture control solenoid
Throttle kicker solenoid

I will take a look for those and see what I can find. The EGR solenoid might be the best spot for it though I may also try the Diverter valve. What about somethink like the Temperature Sensor switch? The one on the drivers side head? Doesn't that always come on in "run" when you turn the car on to send the signal to the gauge? Also, the Throttle kicker solenoid...that the one that sits on the carb and controls high idle when cold and when the A/C is on?

No, the temperature sensor provides a ground path for the gauge. Yes, the throttle kicker is on the carb to increase idle.

All of those devices listed should have a pink/black wire on them that is hot in run, bulb test, and start. You don't necessarily have to tap into the wire at the device. I would trace the harness back to a more convenient place and splice in there.

I'm sure there are better places to tap into but I'm going off less than ideal wiring diagrams, sorry.

Thanks for the input, I think the device you're calling the throttle kicker is actually called the "Idle Stop Solenoid" but either way, I'll take a look at it tomorrow when we actually put the motor back in. I don't recall that device having a pink/black wire on it though, for some reason I want to say it was green. No matter. I'm sure I'll see it and go "Duh" when I see it.

I'm just calling it how I read it from a wiring diagram. It just happens that these less than desired diagrams say the exact same thing as an '87 Camaro factory service manual. It also calls the device a throttle kicker and shows the 12v supply for all of them to be pink/black.

Well, the motor is going in today so that will probably be one of the last things I look for. Pink/black...I'll have to remember that. Thanks for all the help!

Well, We got the motor in last night and I started looking at the wiring and none of those wires is pink/black. I'll have to check them with a volt meter once we get power hooked back up to find a good one I guess...seems to be the only way I'll know for sure which will work.
