vats fixed still interminnet start

sorry for the long explanation but i want to get it all in

soo ive been having problems with the vats system and it ended up being a broken wire to the lock cylinder so i fixed that and over the passed week its been giving me trouble again not wanting to start but if i walk away for a half hour or so and come back most of the time it would start.security light would not go off so i knew it was vats related. today its all screwd up very hot day today went to go to work this morning and no start so i walk a way for a few come back a wala its starts got to work, go to leave no start again security lite on after a few it finally starts while on the highway she dies pull off the highway and try to start her back up and nothing but this time the security light turns off after 5 sec but still not starting cranked it a few times and it would start to crank for like a sec then stop but then it started after a few tries died again few seconds down the road but started right back up got it home shut it off ..but it wont turn back on again ..wtf electrical gremlins, ecu ? oh and the vats connector under the dash reads the correct ohms with the key in the ignition?

Re: vats fixed still interminnet start

When the car died on the freeway, that doesn't sound vats related at all. I would guess that your ignition module is either on its way out or is in fact out.

It sounds to me like since it was such a hot day out plus the engine heat cooked the ign. module to keep it from spinning freely. The heat also effected the starter creating a minor hot start issue. This is just a guess based on what you wrote.

Have you checked to see if your getting spark while cranking? I would start there as I have a hunch it is the ignition module.

im not to worried about the stalling as much as the not starting part but..wouldent the starter still click or crank even if its not geting spark..the car does not crank so therefore it will not spark correct or no ? or does the module tell it to to spark?

Re: vats fixed still interminnet start

I'm sorry I must have misunderstood, I didn't realise the starter wasn't doing anything. If the security light isn't staying illuminated then it isn't vats related. Maybe the starter is on its way out, the next time it doesn't do anything and the security light isn't illuminated try hitting the starter with a hammer and if it works you can bet the starter is bad.

As for the wires you found, I'm looking at a wiring diagram for a 92. There should be a black/yellow wire from the pass decoder box to the start enable relay. Also a dark green wire from the gear selector switch. to the relay.

Re: vats fixed still interminnet start

im thinking it might be a heat soaked starter thats why it wouldent start the second time as for the first time idk. the car does have headers so im going to relocate the starter selonoid and replace the ignition module and the ignition coil hopefully that helps

Re: vats fixed still interminnet start

that's good, looks like you figured it out. I was going to do the remote solenoid myself back when I was having the same issues, but didn't like the extra wires and everything so I went with a LT1 starter (considerably smaller) and no hot start issues ever again.

Re: vats fixed still interminnet start

so i put in a remote selonoid from a tbi mustang part #f492 $10 from the parts store a new battery cable and a push button didnt have any extra wires still the same with the other selonoid just routed to a different place. the car still doesnt like to start with a key when its hot out but starts fine with the button. the car was still stalling but i found a dry rotted hose that goes to the egr valve and some other thing and fixed that. also i advanced the timing 2* and so far its been running fine ..ill keep updated
