Tail lights work but brakes only half the time
Ok so i recently did blue led lights in my gauges and i got my camaro back on the road after some troubles and today i notcie i had no brake lights...how fun. My tails worked but the brake lights didnt, i assumed it had something to do with my recent work so i took a look around the forums using a search and found a thread saying how if 1 wire mounted on top of the steering column comes loose the brakes wont work.
That happened to be my issue and i have it ghetto fixed for now but heres the kicker : i cant tighten my steering column all the way back up without that wire hitting the side of that metal tunnel surrounding it, which wont allow my brake lights to work, is there something im missing???I know its not a short because its just the pressure applied to the wire. Should i just pull tha connector out and try to hang it somewhere else?? I was wondering if i could adjust the mounting of the steering column for left to right because it hangs to the right alot and i think that may be my issue
Any ideas???

yupp, narrowed it down to that, plus my tilt column is destroyed, it has wayy too much play and its sitting to the side in the tunnel like thing for the column which is putting extra stress onto the hazzard switch, should be getting a new column on sat with a new (to me) switch

Re: Tail lights work but brakes only half the time
Ok, I have a very similar problem to this. My tail lights all work fine but the brake lights don't work at all. All of the bulbs are fine. I checked the fuses and noticed the 20 amp fuse that controls the brake lights was blown. I replaced it but as soon as I push the brake pedal down, it blows the fuse. Besides the obvious of a short in a wire, what could be the problem? This thread was talking about a wire in the steering column? I just recently replaced my ignition, so I was wondering if something in the column may not be right? What should I check? Any help is much appreciated.

well the fuse thing sounds like a short like you said but as far as the switch we were referring to: when you drop the column by the 2 9/16th nuts holding it underneath the hush panel youll see a switch on top of the steering column about half way down, this is your ignition switch, it could be black, could be blue, or could be white, ive seen all 3. to put it simply, when you turn your key, it pushes the switch into a different position, obviously back is off, 1 forward is on, and one more is start which is a momentary contact.
if i remember correctly the power to the stop lamps has to pass through there and a few people have noted that the tan wire is the culprit of their issues. I replaced my whole column for one with a better condition tilt. I also skived the wires back and put on new crimp connectors because for some reason my ignition switch looked liked it as missing part of it and the last person just crimped on some connectors and wired em up.
when i was pulling those apart i blew my fuse out as well, i didnt disconnect the neg battery cable and they contacted and sparked, blowing the fuse
Check the connections and condition of the switch itself hope you find it

Well, thanks for the reply. I printed off the diagram and this weekend I am going to go through it to see if I can find the problem. Thanks a lot
