interior lights & cig liter don't work
interior lights & cig liter don't work
I have a 1992 rs 305 & for about a year & a half my car had been searching for idle when it was first started after i added sea foam to the intake to clean carbon. Before adding sea foam the car ran great with no issues at all. After it warmed up it ran great, but if i turned it off & started it back up, it would start searching for idle again, all sensors were replaced but same issue.
So just yesterday i tried to start it & it just cranked but wouldn't start, i checked all & saw that the wire from the battery to the junction just below & to the left of the overflow jug had came loose. I replaced that & it started but now my cigarette liter & my interior lites & the horn doesn't work.dont work & all fuses have been checked.
And the strangest thing is that since that wire came loose & i replaced it, the car now runs great as it did before it started searching for idle a year & a half ago. I've been driving it like this for over a month & it drives great with no engine issues at all, but still the cig liter & interior lites don't work..
I traced all three wires from the battery junction & they all have power, but the battery terminal in the fuse box now has no power.
Any ideas on what could be the problem?

It could be a fusible link (built into the wiring). I had one go when a friend was installing a remote start/alarm once. Same thing happened--interior lights wouldn't come on nor the cig lighter, but the car would run fine.

What would cause a fuse to blow? If its a short, shouldnt it blow everytime I plug a new one in?

same problem with my 92 rs 305. I just carry extra fuses in the car. I think its something to do with the remote start I had put on it because most of the time i figured out it blew the fuse when i remote started it although not every time... i finally resolved to just carrying extra fuses since when that fuse blows its really nothing too serious that loses power.

Interesting that a loose power wire caused a surging idle..
If you have headlights then the fusible link is ok. If you have marker and tail lights then the acc fuse receives power. Change the acc fuse even if it looks ok. Some brands of fuses have a tendency to oxidise at the spade terminals, leaving them rather grey. You can pull it out & put it in but it still won't work.. One method however is to scrape its terminals clean with a knife, instead of replacing it.
And to all those with blowing acc/ctsy fuses; check or disconnect the cig lighter, that's where a large number of people have a short.

do you think removing the cig lighter and revamping it ex: re solder and/or possibly remove the old wire add new wire? could fix the short or do you think its more of a problem that is actually inside the assembly itself? Its not that big of a deal if i have to disconnect it but i sometimes use it for my cell phone charger.
does anybody make a factory reproduction or an aftermarket assembly?
this is really interresting as its the first time ive actually heard a possible reason behind why that D*** fuse keeps blowing.

Re: interior lights & cig liter don't work
Just do a quick search here, I'm sure you'll find hundreds of posts abut the lighter problem, it's quite common.
Sometimes people have been "using" them as a piggy bank, sometimes you can find a small metal shaving or wire strand in there, and sometimes the bi-metal spring in the bottom is simply touching the metal around. I don't think there's any soldering to be done, just disconnect the connector that should be there behind it -> as a diagnostic measure. If the fuses stop blowing then you can take it out for further inspection/ dismantling.

If you are blowing fuses like that then more then likely you have a dead short somewhere in your circuit. Just eliminate one leg at a time and find out where the problem is coming from.
