Have I killed 2 birds with one stone?

I was snooping under the hood of my 87 Iroc stock 305 and came upon these wires hanging from this relay. Some questions come to mind:

A: What is this and what does it effect
B: Can this be the cause of my battery drain and non functioning radiator
fans
C: How do I fix it

A) This is the fuel pump relay. If the car starts fine, it's working.
B) Nope. Those are operated by another relay(s).
C) At least tape each wire to insulate the exposed conductors. Or pull the pins out of the socket (one by one) and put some heat shrink on them.

I have unpluged the relay and found the inside to be filthy. It has black grease or some other substance on the wires and both male and female connections. I vaguely remember reading somthing about avoiding the temptation to clean grease from a relay. Does my memory serve me correctly?

If it's dielectric grease, I'd leave it in there. It protect the terminals against oxidation which is a big enemy of electrical contacts.

Re: Have I killed 2 birds with one stone?

Everyone has problems with these wires, as in they all seem to have a little wear and tear more than other wires that are used.

Anyway my buddy was driving his camaro one day and noticed it putter at one point and from then on started feeling sloppy. So he thought of a MAF. Anyway one day we were under the hood and noticed, dude your wires over here are coming out (showing wire). So we fixed the wires, new relay and rewired it....PERFECT now. His car runs better and doesn't have that hesitation he had before.

Either way, easy fix...but fix it. Also that grease, yeah, to keep from oxidating...as from the story I stated, seem to be very important relays/wires.

Take care....

P.S. Mine are 10x worse than yours...car still running fine. Even still fix.
