When i wired in my tranny temp gauge i just used the wiring off my stereo cause that covered all i needed. You want the switched 12v (i cant remember what color that is..aftermarket stereos have that as yellow i believe), ground (black) and illumination. All those shall work for your gauge. Ive had mine in for awhile now and no problems. Some people im sure will cringe at the thought of wiring it to the stereo but its a gauge. Its not using that much juice to work.

Yup you need to plug your gauge power wire into a switched 12v source. Dont quote me on the color of the wire out the back of the stereo. I have an aftermarket in my car and i believe that universally they have yellow as their switched 12v. As far as what color the factory wire that it plugs into is...that i havent a clue. You can always verify with a voltmeter though.
