EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.......

....I turn the key and my car does not crank. The battery is fine and I don't understand this. It has warmed up here in NH and I have been driving my car a lot. I have probably started my car 50 times this week never a problem.

I get it home and in my driveway I shut it off. 10 min later I go to pull in into the garage and nothing. No crank. In the past whenever this happens I figure the battery is just weak from it sitting so I put my battery charger on it and it starts.

Now I've been driving this car all day and started it a dozen times. The last start of the day and it does this. (luckly it's always in my driveway when this happens and never when I'm out somewhere) But really how long can my luck hold out till I get stranded somewhere.

So I put my charger on it...flip it to 30 amps and it fires right up. pull it into the garage shut it off....restart again....no problem it starts up fine on it's own. what is going on here?

I tried wiggling the shifter but it didn't help. Is this some kind of weird VAST's issue? The car is a 1991 Z28... Thanks Mike

Re: EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.......

stater might have a bad spot on it. ive also had issues of overheating the stater, and it wouldnt do anything till it cooled off. could be a loose connection on the starter solenoid. could be a bad/weak battery, how many volts/CCA is the batt putting out, does it make any sounds when it wont crank, ie clicking?

Re: EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.......

This has happened when the car was cold, No clicking, I figure the battery is fine simply because the car has sat for weeks at a time in cold weather and started right up. Never did do a load test though.

Also keep in mind the car always starts when I put more power to it from my charger.

Re: EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE.......

then sounds like a weak battery. cold weather can kill a battey. ive had 3 brand new ac delco batts die on me due to cold weather. also check for key off drains, and check your charging system. it could also be bad connections at the batt. remove the terminals and inspect and them for corrosion and clean if nessesary. i use baking soda and water with a wire brush.
