89 Firebird Headlights

I have been having problems with my 89 firebird's headlights...They were working fine like 3 months ago and then They started going bad...I had to flick the switch on/off a couple times for the lights to respond doing down...They have always worked going up and they come on but they got hard to put down...

Now they are stuck in the "up" position...they don't come down at all anymore...they lights come on and off and I can hear the motors running ...they just dont go down

Please help me out with any suggestions...

Re: 89 Firebird Headlights

Most people are happy with the TDS kits. I've used their door hinge kits myself on a couple cars. Plus they are a Thirdgen sponsor.

I just used the kit to change the bushings in the headlights...they were right!!! my headlight bushing were a spoonful of crumbs...They go UP great now...The problem now is that they DONT go DOWN with the switch...

when I try to put them down with the switch...they dont even make a noise to try to go down ...but while they are up and I put them up again...they make a little noise as if they are trying to go up even more!!!

Do you think they are in the UP position when "the motor" thinks they are DOWN....so they try to go up more but cant...or maybe a bad relay

I am getting tired of putting them down manually...they kit worked great though...they go up really fast...like new...NO DOWN though PLEASE HELP with ideas

Got a question for you. When you manually crank them down, does it seem like it's hard to turn the **** at the top of the motor at first? It shouldn't be. If it is hard to turn I think I know what the problem is. There is a small ball bearing on the end of the worm-drive shaft. That ball bearing must be present (you did make sure it was there when you installed the motor right?). That bearing is supposed to be supported between the socket on the end of the wormdrive of the motor and the small threaded shaft that is on the opposite side. If the ball bearing is not being supported the worm-drive shaft can climb the gear and jamb in place. This makes the shaft stuck, so the motor can't spin the headlight bucket down. Here's how to fix it. There is a threaded shaft on the oposite end of the motor. There is a slot in the end of that shaft. Use a scredriver to hold the shaft in place and loosen the sheet-metal locknut that is on the threaded shaft. Now turn the screwdriver clockwise until you feel some resistance. Not too tight! Now tighten the locknut.

It could also be that the headlight control module is bad. You'll need one from a 87-89 model year car. The 90+ used a different module that looks identical.
