BlinkerFail
BlinkerFail
So basically my right turn blinker just stays on, and the left turn blinker works fine, but blinks slowly. Ive replaced all blinker lights and recently installed a new alternator cuz the old one died. I am wondering what might be a way to get this to work and maybe speed up teh blinker's blinking speed as well since it is god awful slow. My baby is a 91 z28 5.7 auto.

Re: BlinkerFail
Well the only way to really make it work is to fix the problem. See the way the blinker system works is by use of what they call a flasher bulb. What a flasher bulb is is a set of contacts connected by a bi metalic switch basically. 2 pieces of metal sandwiched together with different rates of expantion vs temperature. So when current flows through it one half expands alot while the other half does not causeing the switch to curl up and pull away from the contact breaking the circuit. When current stops flowing the switch cools it will straiten and once again makes contact closeing the circuit starting the whole process again. What this means is the amount of current flowing through the flasher controls the rate at which it cycles back and forth or blinks. In your case it would seem to be that too little current is flowing through the flasher bulb causeing it to not blink or blink slowly. Have you checked to make sure all the lights are working as they should?

Re: BlinkerFail
Wow.....Talk about a long explanation!
They are designed to stay lit instead of flashing, when 1 bulb goes out. Chances are, you have a dead blinker bulb on that side. That's so how the driver can tell, when as a bulb goes out, instead of driving around with one not working anymore.

Re: BlinkerFail
If the bulbs are good the simple solution to try first, replace the flasher unit under the drivers side dash. A $4.00 part that corrects 99 44/100 of the turn signal (blinker) problems.

Re: BlinkerFail
You probably just need to top off your blinker fluid.
Sorry ... I had to.

I THINK, THEREFORE I BLINK
In time the bi-metallic strip can change in the blinker.
Replace the blinker with a solid state blinker.
Different brands of bulbs can cause a boarder line blinker to exhibit those symptoms you described.
The solid state blinker operates at a constant rate regardless of current draw/voltage.

How bout those dorks too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime!
