what would damage individual leds in a gauge?

Car: 1987 Camaro, 1986 Trans AM
Engine: V6 2.8 multi-port and V8 5.0 FI
Transmission: 5-Speed and Automatic
Axle/Gears: no idea
what would damage individual leds in a gauge?
what would cause a digital gauge with numbered leds to be damaged but only individual leds so a number is incomplete but everything else works fine?
like example
it takes 3 leds to make a 7 display 1 goes out and make it impossible to fully view most numbers becuase they al use that one led
any ideas?
bad product? water? voltage spike?
other?
