i have a 1989 firebird 305tbi. When i try and start it the fuel pump does not prime and the engine does not rotate. I had a service manual but its not much help. When you turn the key all accessories have power. you get a strange noise through the speakers like a whoop. The gauges move iradically. The car was running great and it just cut off. It would rotate but not start. Then that quite and this is all it does. I have checked the starter and that's fine. It does have the vats system but i am not very familiar with it. Any advice or diagrams would be greatly appreciated.

 

Sounds like a bad ground to me, or a flat battery. Have you tried jump starting it form another running vehicle? VATS only prevents the car from starting it wouldn't cause the car to quit while it's running. Is there any way you can remove the plugs and try to turn the engine over manually with a cheater bar to make sure it even rotates.
