Can't See My Timing Mark
I replaced my dizzy a while ago and am struggling to get it timed up right. From what I read you're supposed to be able to see the timing marks by looking between the water pump and the front of the block. Below is what I can see if I look down there.

You can just make out the timing tab but you cannot see the balancer to see the mark on it as it is hidden under the water pump.
If I get my head right down next to the PAS pump I can see this
So I can just make the mark our from here, but trying to point a timing gun at it as well is a nightmare.
I'm tempted to buy an endoscope and just point it under the waterpump. But surely it shouldn't be this hard? Have I got the wrong balancer for this type of timing mark or something? Is there some trick I'm missing?

Timing Slip
From the photos it appears rust is obscuring the marks.
You might have to apply your own marks.
Find top dead center of cylinder 1 the using the mechanical method then draw your new marks.
You can even apply a readymade timing band on the balancer, looks neat.

Re: Can't See My Timing Mark
take a piece of chalk and mark the balancer and kinda hang your head over top and you should see it if you don't see it right at the tab keep looking to either side to see if it is off real bad . I hope it helps you out a little i just went through this a couple weeks ago , also helps if your in a dark area.

Go to Wally Mart and spend a couple of bucks on a bottle of Testors white model paint, and a small model paint brush!! Get under the car, and making sure that you can see the timing mark on the balancer, paint the inside of the mark with the white paint!! It'll stay visible for years, so far it's been visible on my car for 22 years!! It will also be really visble with the strobe of the timing gun!!
Next is to tackle the timing pointer, the best way to view it, is by looking between the water pump, and the power steering pump!!
However, I see in your pictures that you seem to have the crappy probe hole!!
Suggest that you buy a bolt on timing pointer!!

Re: Can't See My Timing Mark
Cheers for the suggestions guys. Sounds like I just need to try harder! I have painted the marker already, I just thought it should be possible to see the balancer looking behind the water pump.
I will let you know how I get on...
