Charging System Failure

I have an 85 TA carb and I recently put in a 350 sb out of an 77 chevy camaro.

I have bought a brand new battery and alternator for the thing, and yet it still wont charge. I have all the wires hooked up and had it looked at by a guy at my nearest car parts store.

The old charging system worked.

Plus, my rear left turning signal stays on and doesnt blink, while it does not turn on at all in the front. Also, the lights on my dash dont work either.

These all worked last year, and I think that shop that did all the work was a little shoddy and I wish I didnt bring the car there.

I cant seem to find a problem, but electrical is not my speciality. I am wondering where I should start for the problem or if it would just be easier to rip out the whole system and start anew. I would like to basically rebuild the car and do all the work myself as a learning experience.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated.

Bumpity

Oh and I forgot, when I got the whole thing tested at AutoZone, there scanner came back that I had a bad alternator. Even though it had literally been out of the box a whole hour and a half.

Re: Charging System Failure

So change out the alternator. They are usually warranty items, might not cost anything. I've bought plenty of 'brand new out of the box' bad parts before. I just replaced my alternator 2 weeks ago - I bought it last year in Sept 2009 and it was bad since day one - it was a free warranty replacement, only cost me the 15 minutes to change it out.

You didn’t say you installed a 2nd Gen harness so we will treat this topic as if you didn’t.

Install a 10Ω resistor
(use at least a 5 watt one) in line with the field terminal (it’s the one on the right as viewed when you hold the alt pulley to you and connector socket @12:00) and the 12 volt line.

The other terminal goes directly to 12 volts.

The stud goes to the battery.

Happy Racing!
