Fuel pump relay problems...please help.

I have been struggling to get my Iroc back on the road and I seem to have hit a wall here.

My car didnt start one day after taking it out and at first it seemed to be the fuel pump. I checked to see whether the fuel pump was working by hooking my battery charger up to the wires and it worked. So i began tracing out where the line was broken and that brought me to the fuel pump relay. After replacing the relay, it seems it may be the connector that is causing the issue.

However, I did notice that the power leading into the relay is at 12 volts when the ignition is off, and upon turning the key cuts down to around 2 volts.

Could it be ECM?
Or is it the connector??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fuel pump relay problems...please help.

I'd start with the connector - easier/cheaper to deal with than the ECM, and I rarely ever see evidence anywhere that an ECM failed, although it seems everyone wants to replace them all the time.

A new connector is available at the dealer - they aren't cheap, and have to be ordered so you'll wait a few days - think last one I got was like $27.

BUT - any relay will work, you just have to splice the right wires to the right relay terminals - this company is great to deal with, they take CC as well as PayPal, and they ship fast - you could save some cash by ordering a relay pigtail and the 40amp relay from them, and these are standardized square relays (not GM specific round ones) and so they are easily replaced. Re: Fuel pump relay problems...please help.

Well,
I have gone to every auto parts store, chevrolet dealer, and junk yard in my general area and so far all I am turning up as far as fuel pump relay connectors is something that looks like this.

http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Det...+50012+2012008

I recently found a connector for a 1984-87 corvette that is for the fuel pump relay that looks exactly the same.

https://pontiworld.com.au/usgmsp/pro...oducts_id=5680

However, it costs almost 80 dollars and I am concerned that if replaced it may not work.

Is the voltage issue of twelve volts with the key off and 2 volts with the key on normal?

The MAF relay and Burn Off relay are also getting the same voltage as the fuel pump relay.

I say splice them wires! Get that relay with the relay connector from the link camaronewbie posted forget tracking that stuff down you'll be a lot happier with how much you spent. GM will screw you over for a new connector...not worth it.

Re: Fuel pump relay problems...please help.

The first thing I'd do in your position is get yourself a good wiring diagram for your car. The correct GM Service Manual would be the place to start. The closest diagram I have to an 89 is for an 87, and they may not be the same.

If multiple powered items are seeing a voltage drop, look at what they have in common... What happens to the voltage at the battery when you turn the key on? Work your way down the circuit from the source (battery) to the destination and you'll find where the voltage is dropping.

On the 87 diagram, all those circuits are powered through the inline fuse and the 1 pin connector near the battery. I'd be looking at those connections first. The voltage doesn't go through the ECM, so you can easily rule that out. Generally if a pigtail goes bad it's usually melted. Hard to miss with a visual inspection.

I wouldn't recommend just dumping the factory relays. GM has this nifty program on the AC Delco website for finding replacement pigtails. Just follow the onscreen prompts and look for the pigtail that matches what you're working with. Then with that part number you can find a vendor and a price. http://www.acdelcotechconnect.com/pi.../all/pigtails/ Another good site to check is http://picowiring.com/ they carry a lot of the pigtails, but not all of them.

Re: Fuel pump relay problems...please help.

alright...so,

I traced the wiring back to a connector near the battery that seems to be where the drop is occuring. It is on the right side of the battery and has six wires. seems to be the second connector on the lines from the battery. I will try to put a picture up here soon.

Re: Fuel pump relay problems...please help.

Yeah the black plug w/the orange & red wires coming from the battery....the orange wires also run to a spot on the back of the headlight & deadend. That plug at the battery is where the power for the relay & the pump is coming from. If im wrong someone please correct me.

Fuel pump/ECM fuse socket. Doubtful youll find the connector in rockauto but its the same connector as all GM single speed coolant fans from the mid 80's to present

Re: Fuel pump relay problems...please help.

Quick question guys. Got an '88 Bird, its been sitting for a while.
Ive started it every few months and its been fine but tried to start the other day and it cranks but no power to fuel pump.
I hear there is a fuse for the pump under the hood but cant find it.
Under dash fuse is fine but where is the one by the engine.
I figure i need power to pump and the relay to see whats not workin. Thx.
