Speedometer Questions

Hey guys, just to confirm, my 1987 Camaro v6 5-speed Sport Coupe has a mechanical speedo right?
Then, how easy is it to convert my mechanical speedometer, to an electric one?
I want to get all electric Autometer Phantom gauges and need any info on how to do so.

Thanks guys.

Re: Speedometer Questions

my 87 auto doesn't look to have a cable going to the back of the instrument cluster. My speed sensor only has the electrical two wires coming out of it. Would a mechanical have the cable coming out of the speed sensor as well as the electrical?

Re: Speedometer Questions

I am doing a conversion from my auto to a 5spd. All you have to do is find a elec speedo from a 90? or newer car and and it will bolt right into your housing. I am sure you can buy the elec speedo sender, but the gear from what I understand is the hard part to track down cause it is different from the mechanical version. I had to get a mechanical drive with gear out of the yard for mine.

Oh and no, the two do not come in the same housing on the newer ones. All it is is a plug for an elec connector. Early cars used an elec conversion off the back of the speedo for computer stuff.

Re: Speedometer Questions

Firebirds got the electric from 87-92
Camaro from 90-92

you will need a box that converts the signal to digital... or something... I don't remember, but I'll do a search for you...
