speedo/odemeter SES light???

got a 89 5.7 tpi with a t-56 swap. i had the tail shaft converted to read the mechanical speedo. so im not running a black box or anything other than stock.

Cable was bouncy and made a wierd noise. Today noise stoped but so did my speedometer and odometer. Alil down the road the SES light pops on. Turn the car off... turn back on and drive... speedo/odo still not working and SES turns off... get about a mile down the road and the SES turns back on. Car runs fine with no other issues. Can someone give me some direction on what i should do? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the cable isn't turning (the light is probably a code 24). At any rate, check the following for some ideas:

Re: speedo/odemeter SES light???

yes, because the ECM will not be getting a VSS signal.
No VSS signal might also cause some minor drivabilty
problems.
