messed up with altenator

I have an 86 firebird. the Alt went out and burned off the belt. I put a new alt in the car and had part of the connector to the back of the alt that goes to the bat tuching the frame so it ended up shorting. i replaced the bat since that fried it and now it does not recharge. So I ran my own wire from the back of the alt to the bat. I seen the other one smoke when i did the short. does anyone have any clue that could help me.

It’s More Fun Without Shorts

There’s no telling what wire(s) might have opened during the short(s).

Therefore go over that area one connection at a time.

The heavier
red wire goes to the positive stud, and should have power at all times.

The thinner
red wire goes to terminal S (the sensing circuit) and should have power at all times.

The
brown wire goes to terminal F (the turn-on input) and should have power when the key is in the RUN position.

Happy Racing!
