No Spark Please help!!!!

I have a stock all original 85 Z-28 LG4 carbed with Old style HEI DIST. I was driving doing about 70 I accelerated for about a second then the motor shut off just like you turned off the key, but all gauges and electronics stayed on. After pulling over I tried to restart, it tried and sputtered a bit didn't start. Then stopped even even trying to fire, I checked my spark plug to see if I flooded it. Plug looked good, so I checked for spark against a ground wire to see if the plug was fouled, no spark. Then I thought I better check the the rest of the ignition system, so I stuck a screwdriver in the plug wire and grounded still no spark. What should I start with?? I can get a new ACCEL dist for $120 from autodorks but would hate to waste the money if it's something else. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue, and what you did to repair. Trying to figure out what could just shut off like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Spark Is Dark

Grab a test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester).

Connect one lead to the coil primary
(the ignition module side not the key side) and the other lead to ground.

Crank the engine.

Does the test light flash while cranking?

Be aware of the difference of FLASHING verses PULSATING which can be observed when you have the test light connected to the key side.

Happy Racing!

Re: Spark Is Dark

BTW - if you have the original factory carb on that motor, then it is computer controlled carb as well as computer controlled distributor - you cannot just stab in any old vacuum advanced distributor in place of it, unless you also swap to non-computer carb.

ALL these distributors are HEI, folks confuse HEI with vacuum advanced - most every distributor is HEI anymore, including vacuum advanced and computer controlled. Non-HEI distributors are the old old jobs that use points ignition.
